For Utah residents

What Utah residents usually need to know

Utah does not authorize a state lottery, so residents who want to play commonly ask about legal purchases while travelling to nearby lottery states. The key issues are physical purchase location, online restrictions, claiming rules and the tax treatment of an out-of-state prize.

Bordering states with lotteries

Utah borders five states that operate lotteries: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico and Wyoming. Nevada also borders Utah but does not operate a state lottery.

Major U.S. games

Powerball and Mega Millions from Utah

These games may be followed from Utah, but tickets are not sold there through a state lottery. The jackpot cards below are informational and link to the national game pages.

Online lottery access

Can I play the lottery online from Utah?

No official online lottery — Utah prohibits lotteries

Utah does not operate an online lottery. The Utah Constitution prohibits the Legislature from authorizing a game of chance or lottery, so residents should not treat another state’s app, a courier or a location workaround as a Utah lottery option.

Another state's official app

Location rules still apply

Official lottery apps usually require the player to be physically inside the selling jurisdiction when the purchase is made.

Lottery couriers

Check legality and availability first

Lottery courier availability and legality vary by jurisdiction. Do not assume a courier can lawfully sell or arrange a ticket while you are physically in Utah.

VPN / location bypass

Not a valid workaround

Using a VPN, false location or other method to bypass geolocation does not change the underlying purchase rules and can create account, payment or claim problems.

Options for residents

How can Utah residents play a U.S. lottery?

1

Buy while physically in a lottery jurisdiction. In-person lottery tickets are sold under the rules of the state or jurisdiction operating the lottery.

2

Check the selling lottery’s age and purchase rules. Residency is not the same as eligibility; the selling lottery controls how and where tickets may be bought.

3

Do not assume online sales work across state lines. Official lottery websites and apps commonly use geolocation and restrict purchases to people physically inside the selling jurisdiction.

4

Keep the ticket and follow the seller’s claim rules. A prize is generally claimed through the lottery that sold the ticket, not through Utah.

This is general information, not legal advice. Lottery purchase, courier, online-sale, age, tax and prize-claim rules vary by jurisdiction.

If you win outside Utah

Where could state tax apply?

General guidance

The state where the ticket was sold and the state where you are tax-resident can both matter. Travel alone does not necessarily change residency. Federal lottery tax rules are separate from state tax.

Idaho trip

Utah resident buys a winning ticket in Idaho

The ticket is claimed under Idaho Lottery rules. The selling state may have its own withholding or tax rules, and Utah residency can remain relevant when the prize is reported.

Colorado trip

You buy a ticket while visiting Colorado

A lawful ticket bought in Colorado remains a Colorado Lottery ticket. Your home state having no lottery does not automatically remove home-state tax considerations.

College

You attend college in Colorado or Idaho

Studying outside Utah does not automatically establish a new domicile. A student may still be a Utah resident while also having filing obligations where they study and buy a ticket.

Temporary work

You work in another state for part of the year

Temporary employment can create nonresident or part-year filing issues without necessarily changing domicile. A lottery prize can add another layer because the selling state’s rules also apply.

Move

You move from Utah before claiming

A later move does not automatically determine the tax treatment of an earlier win. The dates of purchase, draw, residence and claim can all be relevant.

Family purchase

A relative in another state buys a ticket

Who owns the ticket and who is entitled to claim it can become important. Informal arrangements should not be treated as a substitute for checking the selling lottery’s rules.

Why there is no Utah Lottery

Utah lottery context

Utah takes one of the clearest legal positions in the country: its constitution says the Legislature may not authorize a game of chance or lottery. There is therefore no Utah Lottery.

Future status

Could Utah get a lottery?

Utah’s constitution currently says the Legislature may not authorize a game of chance or lottery. A state lottery would therefore require constitutional change before ordinary lottery legislation could take effect.

Lottery scam warning

No Utah Lottery means no genuine Utah Lottery prize notice

Because there is no state lottery operating in Utah, a message claiming you have won an official “Utah Lottery” jackpot is a major warning sign. Never pay a fee, tax or processing charge to unlock an unexpected prize. Verify any real out-of-state ticket directly with the lottery printed on the ticket.

Unexpected winYou never bought a ticket or entered.
Upfront feeYou are asked to pay before a prize is released.
Fake state brandingThe message claims to be from a lottery that does not exist.
Utah lottery FAQ

Questions from residents who want to play

Does Utah have a state lottery?

Utah does not currently operate a state lottery. There is no in-state lottery operator selling its own draw tickets or participating as a Utah lottery in Powerball or Mega Millions.

Can I buy Powerball tickets in Utah?

No. Powerball tickets are not sold by a state lottery in Utah. A player would need to buy through a lottery jurisdiction where Powerball is legally sold and satisfy that lottery’s purchase requirements.

Can I buy Mega Millions tickets in Utah?

No. Mega Millions tickets are not sold through a Utah state lottery. The game is available only through participating lottery jurisdictions.

Can I play the lottery online from Utah?

Utah does not operate an online lottery. The Utah Constitution prohibits the Legislature from authorizing a game of chance or lottery, so residents should not treat another state’s app, a courier or a location workaround as a Utah lottery option.

Can I use another state’s official lottery app while I am in Utah?

Official lottery apps usually require the player to be physically inside the selling jurisdiction when the purchase is made.

Can I use a lottery courier from Utah?

Lottery courier availability and legality vary by jurisdiction. Do not assume a courier can lawfully sell or arrange a ticket while you are physically in Utah.

Does using a VPN or changing my phone location make online lottery play legal?

Using a VPN, false location or other method to bypass geolocation does not change the underlying purchase rules and can create account, payment or claim problems.

Which bordering states have lotteries near Utah?

The bordering lottery states shown on this page are Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Wyoming. Availability varies by game, so use each state hub to see the games currently mapped there.

Can a Utah resident buy a lottery ticket in another state?

In many U.S. lottery jurisdictions, an in-person buyer does not have to live in that state. The important point is that the ticket must be bought lawfully where the lottery is sold. Age, purchase, claim and tax rules are set by the selling jurisdiction.

If I win a ticket bought in another state, where do I claim it?

A winning ticket is normally claimed under the rules of the lottery that sold it. Large prizes may require an in-person claim. Check the official lottery’s claim deadline, identification requirements and claim location.

If I am on holiday or a business trip when I buy the ticket, which state taxes the prize?

There is no single answer. Federal tax can apply, the selling state may have its own tax or withholding rules, and your tax-resident state may also tax out-of-state income. The fact that you were travelling does not necessarily change your tax residence.

What if I am at college or temporarily working in another state when I win?

College attendance or temporary work does not automatically settle tax residency. Domicile, part-year residence, the selling state and each state’s sourcing rules can all matter, especially for a large prize.

Can somebody in another state buy a lottery ticket for me?

Rules and ownership issues vary by lottery. Informal arrangements can create problems over who owns the ticket and who can claim it. Check the selling lottery’s rules before relying on another person or a third-party service.

What if I move states after buying a winning ticket but before claiming it?

Moving does not automatically erase tax or filing obligations tied to the selling state or your earlier residence. A major winner should establish the relevant residency and sourcing rules before claiming.

Can I stay anonymous if I win a ticket bought in another state?

Winner-disclosure and anonymity rules are set by the lottery jurisdiction where the ticket was sold. Your home state having no lottery does not override the selling lottery’s disclosure rules.

How can I tell if a lottery message is a scam?

If you did not buy a ticket or enter a legitimate drawing, be suspicious. Never pay an upfront fee to release an unexpected prize. Because Utah has no state lottery, an unsolicited claim that you won an official “Utah Lottery” is an immediate red flag.
